Bklyn Clay West

The third location of BKLYN CLAY is housed in a historic Tribeca building near the Hudson River, where MuNYC collaborated with the clients, interior designer, mechanical and structural engineers, and building management to create a state-of-the-art ceramics studio. The project required thoughtful integration of modern systems within the older structure, respecting the building’s character while adapting it for contemporary use.

One of the key challenges was designing the venting system for the kilns and addressing fireproofing concerns within the building’s combustible structure. MuNYC worked carefully to ensure that all fire safety regulations were met, while maintaining the studio’s functional layout and aesthetic vision. The placement of mechanical systems was also planned with an eye on flood zone requirements, ensuring durability and functionality. Storage solutions were a critical component of the design, with multi-level shelving and efficient use of space to meet the studio’s needs. While MuNYC remained aware of the clients’ budget constraints, the focus was on delivering a high-quality and functional space that balances modern requirements with the building’s historic integrity.

The result is a bright, open studio that provides a dynamic environment for potters of all skill levels, seamlessly blending the building’s historical charm with the demands of a modern ceramics studio.
