Bklyn Clay Sunset Park

BKLYN CLAY’s first studio in Sunset Park is located on a busy corner, with a small storefront on the first floor drawing in plenty of foot traffic. The project involved transforming a multi-level interior space into a functional, modern ceramics studio, addressing several design challenges such as insufficient natural lighting and limited street-level frontage.

To bring more natural light into the space, MuNYC worked closely with the clients, interior designer, and mechanical engineer to create a new opening on the side street, significantly brightening the interior and creating a more inviting atmosphere. The multi-level interior required thoughtful planning to ensure seamless transitions between areas and maximize the studio’s functionality while meeting stringent NYC code requirements regarding accessibility and fire safety.

Storage and layout were optimized to accommodate both working potters and classes, ensuring efficient use of the compact space. While the project faced technical challenges, including the integration of mechanical systems to condition the space and exhaust the kilns within the small footprint, the final result is a vibrant and welcoming studio that balances the limitations of the space with the needs of the community it serves.

This Sunset Park location offers a bright, well-designed environment that makes pottery accessible to a wider audience, establishing BKLYN CLAY as a destination for ceramics enthusiasts.
