Williamsburg Garden
The Garden project is a thoughtfully designed outdoor space that merges the yards of two adjacent townhouses and two associated structures in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Designed in collaboration with the property owner, MuNYC created the garden as a cohesive and functional environment that invites relaxation, social gatherings, and an opportunity to connect with nature.
The garden stitches together multiple access points, transforming them into a seamless setting where residents and guests can enjoy activities such as dining, meeting friends, or simply sitting in tranquility. Built-in planters were incorporated throughout the garden, structuring the locations of greenery and serving as elements for seating and defining space. Additionally, the design integrates existing trees, preserving and enhancing the natural surroundings. The selection of materials plays a crucial role in visually connecting the garden to the surrounding built environment. Recycled masonry was used for retaining walls and pathways, while elevated wooden decks and seating platforms were added to highlight zones for seating and meeting. These features create distinct yet cohesive areas within the garden. A waterfall feature with fish provides soothing background noise, effectively drowning out the sounds of the nearby Williamsburg Bridge. Integrated lighting highlights key elements, ensuring the garden remains inviting and atmospheric during evening hours.
The result is a peaceful urban retreat that offers an escape from the city while encouraging social interaction.
