Fifth Avenue Apartment
The project at 995 Fifth Avenue, a prestigious address overlooking the entrance to the Metropolitan Museum and Central Park, involved the renovation of an eleventh-floor apartment in this historic pre-war building. Originally designed by Rosario Candela in 1926 as The Stanhope Apartment Hotel, the building was converted into a high-end residential co-op in the early 2000s.
The renovation focused on updating the apartment to be fully handicapped accessible while preserving its timeless elegance. This required careful modifications to the layout and details, maintaining the charm of the original design while ensuring modern functionality. Select partitions were removed to create an open layout and provide more space.
In addition, warm elements were introduced to soften the clean white palette. White oak built-ins, wall paneling, doors, and trim were added to complement the existing white oak flooring, creating a harmonious blend of warmth and modern refinement. High-end features such as motorized shades, switches with programmable lighting scenes, and smart technology like digital shower and toilet controls were also introduced, enhancing the apartment’s comfort and functionality. The result was a thoughtfully updated space that combined classic charm with modern convenience.
